The Struggle Is Real

Eurgh! So I’ve been a bit quiet of late. Trying to get on with this ‘Freelance’ stuff. It all started off so well. I landed a deal for two websites which was the equivalent of about three months wages. That was in my first week of going it alone. Money behind me, all good. I ended up doing a bit of contracting for my old place here and there, but I never really purposefully pursued freelance bits. Mainly because EVERYONE already has freelancers in the automotive field, and you don’t want to step on your colleagues toes…that can make car…

Smartphones = The Death Of A Generation

Next time you’re out shopping, or at a train station, maybe at the airport just put your phone down for five minutes and look around. I guarantee a disproportionate amount of the people within your gaze will be glued to their phones. It saddens me every time i see it. I took this picture at Geneva airport earlier this year, after sitting opposite this lot for nearly an hour. Out of 14 people in view, only two don’t have a phone out…and one of those is on his Mac. Life is so precious to be wasted on such a device.…

Here’s why you shouldn’t go to uni

Yesterday there was a lot of talk about free tuition fees in the media here in the UK. You see, once upon a time university was free. Back then around 7% or something stupid actually went on to further education and a degree. As governments changed and more people attended uni, it was decided that fees should be introduced. If you want a degree these days you have to pay roughly £9,000 a year for the privilege. That’s on top of any accommodation if you don’t live in the same town, not to mention living expenses. The whole secondary school system is…

Sorry for the silence

I wanted to update HMN as regular as possible. But in all honesty, this first month i’ve purely been focusing on making it work. It’s been mega busy, three days into being freelance i’d secured a deal worth 1/5th of my old salary. Which will keep me going for a few months at least. A few weeks after that i picked up another contract worth roughly a month’s wages. That’s another month i don’t have to worry about. I’m not saying this to brag either, it’s just to show that it can be done. I’ve got roughly three, maybe four…

What do you desire?

So i happened to come across this video the other day. The speech is from Alan Watts, a British Philosopher who died in 1973. For me, not only is it highly motivational, but it sums up the whole way of life that’s narrated to us from an early age. You must go to school. Achieve high grades. Find a good job with a career path. Work your way up. Have kids and a family. Retire. Die. That’s the structure of life for pretty much the entire planet. If you enjoy your job then great, crack on. But for the majority of…

The first full week

Having ended my 9 to 5 on a Tuesday, the intervening three days felt a bit like ‘time off’. Obviously I was working, I mean it hasn’t sunken in yet that this is it. Each day is going to be at home, doing my own thing. So, now that a full five ‘working’ days have passed…it still feels the same. Money wise it was a bit slower than the first few days. I still made enough, but it feels like I should be doing even more. I’ve found myself working much longer hours already…because i’m at home, it just feels the…

The first day…

Saying goodbye wasn’t that hard, I wouldn’t have changed working there as I wouldn’t be in the place i am today. I wouldn’t have met some very special, life changing people along the way, and i’d probably be looking at another 9-5 job in another IT company right now. Walking away, the sense of freedom is incredible. Suddenly you’ve gone from a written piece of paper telling you to be here at this time until that time, being given X amount for it with all manner of rules and punishments if that’s not adhered too, to being the master of…

The Penultimate Day

I’ve just got home from my penultimate day working a 9 to 5. The realisation of what I set in motion two months ago is now dawning on me. I’m not worried, honestly. It’s just a bit unnerving not having a structure in place for Wednesday. Don’t get me wrong, i know what i’m doing that day. But it’s me deciding it. I’ve never been allowed that freedom before. Well, not in a work environment anyway. Am i going to be good at arranging my days? On Wednesday i’m going to contact a few people I know, drop some business cards…
